Sweden 2014 - A Warm Welcome

We left the cruise ships behind this year for a different kind of vacation. Sweden has been calling my name since Anastasia and my last visit in 2011 for Lotta's wedding. Orlando and I visited together during our whirlwind tour of Europe in 2003, but with only 3 days, it wasn't possible to see all that much. And Myney finally got to see what was so special about this place that has been such an important part of my life.

The people, especially my family, are the best example of what makes Sweden so wonderful. At 17, I was welcomed into this family with open arms and every time I've come back, the welcome has been just as warm. We give big thanks to Lotta & Janne and Eva & Christer for hosting us in Sweden, and to Kalle, Viktor, Hedil, Frans and Ture for making us feel so at home. We could not have asked for a better home away from home.

Anastasia almost immediately connected with Frans and Ture, 4 year old twin sons of Lotta and Janne. On our first day, they jumped together on the trampoline, the next day it was hide and seek. They were inseparable as we toured Stockholm, and by the end of the visit, they were best pals at the playground.

Food is, of course, an important part of every good vacation. This one did not disappoint. Lotta is an outstanding cook, and she outdid her self with our first dinner of salmon with teryaki noodles and honeydew. I'm not a huge fan of fish, but this dinner was wonderful. And on our last night in Sweden Christer made fresh haddock with egg sauce that made me understand why people would choose to order fish at a restaurant. There was also amazingly flavorful pork, beef on the grill, swedish pancakes (which are dinner in Sweden), Midsummer dinner of herring, potatoes, Jansson's surprise, and cheese pie, and baconost (bacon flavored cheese in a tube) for breakfast. We didn't take pictures of everything we ate, but some of the deliciousness included:
