She's a Big Girl Now

DC law says that all children must ride in approved safety seats until they are 8 years old and weigh at least 80 lbs. After a bit of research, we came to the conclusion that Anastasia is both tall enough and heavy enough to make the move to a booster seat. So, in advance of our visit to West Virginia this weekend, we decided that we'd upgrade her from the toddler seat to a booster seat.

She was very excited when she saw it for the first time. Even more happy when she learned that she could unbuckle it herself. She's very comfy in her new seat, and it worked great for the long ride to Hall and Amy's.

West Virginia Bound

Hall and Amy celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this weekend and we had planned a roadtrip to help them celebrate for a while. It's a very pretty drive, culminating in a rather harrowing drive up Butler Mountain Road. We couldn't have ordered better weather. In the city, temperatures were in the high 90s, on the mountain top, it was closer to 85 with a lovely breeze that kept everything comfortable.

We arrived as the party was just hitting it's stride, with music provided by Orlando's cousins Xander and Orion, and their Brown Chicken Brown Cow String Band.

Anastasia found a great friend in two year old Analee. Together they played with the water baloons, the badminton set and chased each other all around the yard (Analee decided clothes were unnecessary for the afternoon).

Myney and I traded duties as photographer during the party. She took what is now my favorite family photo of all time.

As the day wore on, Orlando taught Anastasia some of the joys of the country, including all the fun things you can see in the clouds and night sky.

When Stasia got tired, we headed back down the mountain to bed with a promise to come back in the morning for breakfast. The morning was a typical West Virginia morning. Orlando enjoyed the view from the other side of the kitchen on a Sunday morning.

While we waited for breakfast, we decided to take a walk out to the fields to see the edge of the property. Anastasia was very excited to see lots of butterflies and pick a handful of yellow flowers.

After breakfast, and a few more water balloons, it was time for us to head back down the mountain and start making our way home. Annie loved the visit with Hall and Amy and can't wait to go back.

A Surprise Visitor

Sandi called me Sunday evening and asked if I could juggle my schedule for Tuesday morning to spend a little time with her oldest son, Andrew, who would be flying in with his dad late on Monday night. I worked it out with my boss to take the day off, and I met Andrew at the airport and drove him home to DC. He was pretty psyched.

Anastasia was so excited to get to see her cousin, and was even willing to give up a day at summer camp to visit with him. They were up with the sun and playing from one end of the house to the other with great abandon.

After going over the options available to us for the morning, Andrew selected the museum with Dinosaurs and Butterflies (also a pretty big hit from when his sister Ashley was here.) We left early and Andrew got his first ride on a the Metro.

Waiting for the museum to open, I managed to get a picture of Andrew looking very much like his uncle Chris.

Once we got inside, we went straight to the Butterflies where Andrew and Annie worked together to figure out what we were seeing.

While we were waiting for the doors to open, we got early bird tickets to the Dinosaurs in 3D, which the kids were pretty excited to see. So, after a quick snack, it was off to the movies where Anastasia taught Andrew her preferred method for wearing glasses.

Andrew's dad was ready to start the long drive back to San Antonio when we got back from the museum. So, it was a quick goodbye then time to hit the road.

We wish it could have been a longer visit, but we certainly tried to make the most of the short time we had. Andrew is already planning out what he wants to do the next time he's here.

Beating the Heat

We've had a rather hot summer, and shortly after Mom, Dad and Ashley returned to Texas, our air conditioning went on the fritz. Of course, the heat wave seemed to boost into overdrive as soon as the A/C died, so we were left to our own devices to keep cool. We all soon migrated back downstairs to cooler climes. On a shopping trip, I was very easily swayed to make the $10 purchase of a Slip 'N Slide for Annie (really, it was for Annie, I swear.)

She wasn't so good as sliding on it, but she did enjoy the lovely sprinkly water coming out. When it's 102 degrees outside, and only a little cooler inside, sprinkly water is just what the Dr. ordered.
